Thanks for nothing SIU. Horrible. SIU will probably not win another game non-conference and then play a miraculous game one day against an upper tier MVC team and destroy their RPI. When is Lowery gonna leave?

Can a player make all-conference from a team that wins 3 or less conference games?

Seck is good. How bad must the rest of them be?!

I wouldn't lose any sleep worrying about losing to this team.

However, any team that loses to southern deserves to get their rpi crippled.

unfotunately winning could still hurt your sos and rpi...

Fun factoid: When discussing the base RPI (ie without bonuses/penalties for good wins/bad losses), a team that beats A and loses to B will have the same RPI as a team that beats B and loses to A. In other words, a team with a given record that plays a given schedule will have the same RPI regardless of which teams they lost to.

Put another way, say Creighton or Wichita loses to SIU. That hurts only to the extent that 1)it's a loss and 2)they played SIU, and its horrible record, to begin with; "losing to SIU" doesn't create some triple negative deduction in the base RPI. For RPI purposes, if Wichita beats Creighton and loses to SIU, it would be the same as them beating SIU and losing to Creighton, all else being equal.

Now, the NCAA admits they take into account good wins (generally defined as Top 50 RPI) and bad losses (RPI below 150), though they've never said officially how or even if it's done as a part of the RPI or just something considered in the overall resume.

My head just exploded.
There are three rules that I live by, never get less than 12 hours sleep, never gamble with a guy who has the same first name as a city and never get involved with a chick with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Stick to that and everything else is gravy!

While the explanation for how the RPI is calculated is correct. It misses the way the RPI is used by the selection committee.

A teams own RPI isn't used or looked at. However, the RPI is used to judge the quality of the teams it played and used to determine the strength of individual wins and losses. So losing to a 300+ RPI team may not mathematically change your RPI (assuming the overall w/l was the same) It does affect have a big affect because now you have a +300 RPI loss against your resume.

A lot of the confusion happens because lots of people calculate the RPI live throughout the season, but it's real use is at the end with the committee. That's why after playing a crappy team, you'll often see the relative RPI drop, and early in the season everything jumps around so much. Until you get a statistically significant data set, the numbers aren't reliable.
