Could McDermott be a first team All American?

He's in second and is just a hair off the national scoring lead. Getting lots of recognition nationally. I cannot recall the last MVC player to be a 1st team All Amerian - X? Hersey?

Hersey was the last 1st team AA in 88'

I think he can. He is probably currently right on the cusp.

If he keeps up his current scoring and rebounding pace he would certainly be deserving of that honor. And it would certainly be indicative of a mid major bias if he doesn't at least come close.

I love watching him play. I'm really looking forward to seeing him against MSU on Dec 28 (televised locally) and against WSU on Dec 31 (on ESPNU).

If McD's stats continue at this pace (consistently shows up at 25 and 10) and the Jays make the NCAA, he's a shoe-in. To be a truely elite player, he needs to improve his defense.

By definition, if he is first team all american, he would be a truly elite player.

An analysis on how Grant Gibbs is a major contributor to Doug McDermott's success.

Catching up on some of the ESPN articles and there were a couple references to McDermott:

Who's the next mid-major player that will steal our hearts in March?

Katz: There is nothing mid-major about Doug McDermott. The Creighton wing scored 35 in a Bluejays win this week. McDermott was the best scorer on a Team USA squad last summer, and he has the ability to carry Creighton quite far in March.

Medcalf: Creighton's McDermott. He's the coach's son. But he was expected to walk-on prior to last season. A season later, he's the No. 2 scorer in America (25.2 points per game) and an All-America candidate. Boosting his made-for-March-TV storyline is the fact that he played with Harrison Barnes in high school. Get ready to fall in love, America.

The media heads all appear to to love DMac's game. Playing on a national team last summer contributed to that. Getting media attention is important for getting AA recognition.

I think the only thing that keeps DMac off 1st team AA this year would be if there are some upper class players who voters have been wanting to vote for in previous years, but it seems those guys all go pro.
