2 Big East teams leaving for basketball only conference?

Postby Red » December 27th, 2011, 11:16 am

This would make things interesting again.

According to a report, two current Big East members have discussed the possibility of leaving the league to form a new one built around perennial basketball powerhouses.

Dec 21, 2011 - Two current members of the Big East have had conversations about leaving the conference to start a new league built around traditional basketball powers, according to Brad Wolverton of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Not too surprising considering SMU, Houston and UCF don't add too much to basketball OR even football....

Yes I saw this elsewhere. It even mentioned Creighton as a possibility but I'm not buying it. CU would never leave the Valley.

I've heard a few rumors about CU possibly being in a catholic conference if the Big East explodes. It would be a long shot but a nice idea that I think CU would entertain if it ever happened.

If that mythical Catholic League came to fruition Creighton would pack their belongings in five minutes and leave the Valley faster than Todd Graham left Pitt. Not that I would blame them, but come on they have a little elitism in them like most Jesuit institutions do. But this Catholic League would be irresistible to any Jesuit school.

Georgetown, Villanova (if they dropped their football), Temple (if Villanova didn't join), Seton Hall, Marquette, Dayton, SLU, Butler (maybe, they were founded by Catholics I think although they technically aren't religious, I could be wrong). There are probably a few others I'm forgetting. Biggest problem for Creighton is most of the schools are on the east coast so we would be the easiest to exclude geographically.

What I saw which was speculation is that it would include Temple, Villanova, Richmond, Dayton, Xavier, SLU, DePaul & Marquette. The writer then went on to say that Richmond would be dropped for Creighton if the new league (that may or may not happen) wanted more of a midwest flavor instead of east coast.

The two Big East Schools behind this are supposedly DePaul & Marquette. I would think they would like a midwest flavor to the league but what do I know.

I was stunned not to see Bradley mentioned.

Temple is a public school (seems weird given their name). Richmond is private but nonsectarian...not sure how much emphasis would be placed on being Catholic.

there are several dozen Catholic schools in the area.

presumably, it'd be some of the A-10 schools also in the mix.

I'm not sure Temple and 'Nova will ever be in the same conference. 'Nova doesn't want anything to do with them.
