What On Earth Happened?

Postby Aargh » December 28th, 2011, 9:15 pm

Quite a few posters predicted DU would beat InSU, but a 15-point win for Drake is jaw-dropping.

That's the least surprising game.

MSU - 77
CU - 65

OK, now I think I'm asleep and this is some crazy dream. MSU isn't bad this year, but CU is REALLY good. Then MSU blows CU up by 12 in Omaha? Huh? An early roadie W in Omaha is usually enough to put a team into the driver's seat for the Valley championship, but this is too early.

Then there's the WSU game. Any Valley team winning by 39 on the road is unbelievable. BU isn't that bad. I'm not willing to accept that WSU is that good. That was just an insane score.

What kind of year is this going to be? This is the craziest start I can remember in Valley play - and I'm older than some dirt.

Reality happened.

I don't know how anybody that follows the Valley could be too surprised by this. This stuff happens all the time, every year in our conference.

SIU looked really good against decent competition in all their losses in Hawaii.

SIU looks like they might be getting it together and figuring it out just in time to cause problems in league play.

I might be done trying to pick games. Note: I did have the score for the CU-MSU game exactly right, but the wrong winner.

There is an exception to the above. SIU @ WSU. The Shocks managed to lose this game last year and a co-championship along with it.

It's conference season...everything changes. Every team sees this as a new opportunity and the intensity is kicked up a notch. The fun has begun!

I bet nobody saw this coming. The tie for first includes:

Drake
Evansville
MSU
WSU
IlSU

3 of the "top 4" lost their first Valley game. I'm reminded of InSU in 2006. They came into league play with an RPI in single digits, but finished in the bottom half of the league. We could see all sorts of unexpected results again this year.

Picking winners right now is dang near impossible...every team has shown both strength and vulnerability...most of the games look like coin flips.
