OT: Kansas recruit Selby not cleared by NCAA

McDonald's All-American Josh Selby hasn't yet been cleared to play at Kansas because of questions the NCAA has about the legitimacy of his amateur status, multiple sources have told CBSSports.com. Selby was rated by Rivals.com as the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2010. He's one of three consensus top 15 recruits now known to be at risk of not being certified to compete as a freshman because of academic or amateurism concerns. Also in that group is Selby's cousin, Will Barton, a freshman at Memphis who was ruled ineligible by the NCAA on Wednesday because of issues about his academic background, sources told CBSSports.com.

Editorial comment - College basketball recruiting has gone from bad to worse since the NBA began requiring players to be one year removed from high school before entering the league. AAU coaches and handlers control these kids and money is obviously exchanging hands all over the place. Let's get back to allowing high schoolers to apply directly to the NBA and use the NBDL as a minor league. If we allow baseball players to sign a professional contract immediately after high school, why not basketball players?

I agree with you 100%. Why should good student-athletes be denied a scholarship for someone who is going to spend only one year in school? Isn't our taxpayer money to public institutions that provides free rides to these individuals to be helping them get an education?

Of course SIU has a ton who has BETTER help but I'd say 6'7" small forward Mamadou Seck a lefty from Southeastern Illinois CC handled the ball, can slash to the hole, play defense and rebounded almost 10 a game for SIC .
SIC was in the D-1 JUCO final 16 at Hutchinson this year.
