I honestly think this is pretty much true. If not, then several people with many millions of dollars, some of which they are willing to part with. Successful D1 athletics just requires a LOT of money these days. And it has trickled down from just being a football thing.

Another option if you're interested in the Duggar route, Jim Crutchfield of DII West Liberty.

Crutchfield was one of 5 finalists that interviewed for the Bradley job last time around.

Maybe you can borrow the Koch brothers for a bit...they should understand that to improve the MVC, they need to share their wealth across all 10 members

Crutchfield sound really interesting. The article makes it sound like he doesn't have any interest in leaving. sounds like a guy who is probably a lot smarter than most basketball coaches. Would be interesting to see if it could translate to D1. I would be excited to see him try. Would need to get a legit recruiter on his staff.

I forgot how great that one Drake team was. 07-08 Drake was picked to finish 9th in conference, wound up winning the league at 15-3 with all 3 losses by 3 points or less. They had a 21 game win streak that year with wins over Iowa, Iowa St., and beat Butler in the Bracket Buster. Adam Emmenecker, who was a walk on the previous 3 years, was the leader of that team. One of the great underdog stories in recent college basketball history. On a side note, the team that did finish 9th that year was Wichita St. at 4-14

Gregg Marshall's first year at WSU was 07-08. The following year he was 8-10 (17-17) and finished tied for 5th. Since year two Gregg Marshall has won at least 12 MVC games, and at least 25 regular season games (three years of 30 or more) and has finished first or second every year. That's seven years that included two NITs (one NIT Championship) and five consecutive NCAA births. His post season tournament record at WSU is 6-1 in the NIT, and 9-5 in the NCAA. WSU is one of five schools to win an NCAA tournament game for the past four years. His MVC record over nine seasons is 117 and 45 and 112 and 21 in the last 7 seasons.

Yes I know Evansville finished 10th. 2007-2008 was not only Greg Marshall's first year but also Marty Simmons' first year too. It's interesting they finished 9th and 10th that year and 1st and 2nd last year. The point in bringing up Wichita finishing 9th was that was where Drake was forecast to finish. Also just the shock that Wichita could even end up 4-14 considering the dominance they have held over the rest of the league for the past several seasons.

It looks like Drake will be starting from scratch next season, about like Bradley last year. Any new coach will have to get rid of a lot of these players if he hopes to build a competitive team within three years. The problem will be fining a coach who can possible do that. Does any Valley team have a great assistant who would possibly be a really good head coach? Are there any assistants who were real successful head coaches at some level in the past?

Chris Jans. He's got a little baggage, but is an exceptional assistant that was successful in his one year as a head coach. He'd be perfect.
