The fact that a bunch of people actually bought in to "Yeah we have a big endowment, oh sure we'll spend a bunch of it on athletics" and just ran with it is mind-boggling. A 3rd grader would know enough to say "OK, how about you start upgrading your program with all that money for a few years and we'll be very interested."

I was okay with staying at 9 at that time as well.

We rushed in a reactionary way and made a poor decision. We would have been okay running at 9 until a clear 10th showed up.

We had to add somebody. Scheduling for the top of this league is borderline impossible now, can't imagine having to try to get two more.
