Also, I was emailing yesterday with the NEW Chairman of the NCAA Selection Committee this year, Mark Hollis from Michigan St. A change from last year is good news!

Within the emails back and forth was this...

" There are a number of factors that come into play in determining the 36 best teams for at-large. In addition to observation (live, television & recorded), the Committee has access to records, data, metrics and various points of difference. These are all debated and ultimately voted upon by the Committee.

The Committee is currently comprised for the athletic directors from Northeastern, Stanford, Creighton, Duke, UNC-Asheville, Kentucky, BYU, Ohio, New Mexico and myself. We strive to get it right and it comes with season-long work and dedication – on a volunteer basis."

Looks like they do use all metrics, even if the TV people mainly show RPI. However, that doesn't mean they won't choose the metrics they want to select for inclusion of the teams they want in.

Best news all year is that the Ohio AD is still on the committee.

I refuse to believe that UNI is 0-4 and 4-10.

Something funny is going on.

Very interesting observations coming from the source itself. Nice pull.

So there's a lot at work other than RPI, contrary to what one unnamed poster ragged on about? Got it. Again, thanks for the info.

You do realize that the chair of a committee HAS to say that so he doesn't paint himself into a corner on Selection Sunday right? You can't be that naive.

I've never said other factors aren't at play. What I've said is historically RPI has been the heavyweight, and the most cited when a team is included in or out. If you've been a fan of myself and our site over on RBF for as long as you claim you'll find that I'm 100% against RPI. I think it's a terrible metric. But it's the one that most correlates to the selection committee's results on selection sunday, so it's used the most in analyzing teams in the present day.

When CBS starts coming out with sagarin and massey rankings/ratings more prominently during their selection show, then your point becomes more valid. When "record against the top 50 or top 25" becomes Sagarin or Massey top 50 or 25 instead of RPI, then you'd be right. Until then, RPI unfortunately reigns.
