It should always be noted that Grand Canyon is a for-profit concern, like Trump University, DeVry, and the Cosmetology and Car Repair College down the street. There will not be money spent on academic research unless it has an ROI that passes muster from the accountants that disseminate the money received from their New York Stock Exchange funding. (Here is their latest stock price. Right now, they have a market cap of $3.7 billion. They might be able to buy buy every school in the league.)

Some people might be comfortable with that. But I think the independent, non-profit status of our higher education model, coupled with a crosshatch of state-financed schools, is what has made American higher education the greatest higher education system in world history-- more accessible than the German Universities that declined under Hitler's sociological and ideological purges, more practical and less class dependent than Oxford and Cambridge, and more vital and widespread than the higher education in the Roman Empire or Middle Ages.

But if you think that the 240-year experiment of American Democracy should be sold off and replaced with "running the country like a business!!", then we're already mostly to a for-profit system of higher education, as well. Let's get the Fire Departments and Police Departments and Health Departments and Coroners and the Centers for Disease Control and the EPA set up on a for-profit model, too.

What does that have anything to do with this thread? We all know they are for profit. Doesn't change the fact that they are clearly one of the top 5 to to become the next Gonzaga, Wichita state, Butler, VCU.

Clearly? Let's wait until they finish with better than a 131 RPI and start making the Tournament before we annoint them the next Gonzaga. Two of their recruits for next year are 2 stars, and the other is 3 star. Majerle needs to beat NMSU first.

Fair enough. Not enough has been proven. This will be their first season eligible for postseason play. But, the recipe for success is there. Also, those level of prospects are the same Illinois State has coming in this season. And, they're doing it as a low major. Eventually they'll force their way into the mid-major category and the lure or an ex-NBAer as coach, in a beautiful city/climate, with an amazing playing atmosphere will bring in even better prospects. I realize they have a lot of money so its easier for them to do, a la Wichita State, but it also takes a program being managed well and they are managing that program well.

It'll be interesting to see if Grand Canyon can continue to schedule like they have. They've been able to get some high majors to come play on their floor. I don't know how sustainable that is for them long term especially if they get good enough to start beating some of them.

I'm high on their future and I'd take them and NMSU in the Valley in a heartbeat, but that's just not going to happen when traditional university presidents are making that decision.

Also keep in mind if the Suns and or ASU were to play better then that the Grand Canyon glitter would likely start to flake away. Also if Majerle truly does prove to be an outstanding coach and he were to be hired away by a P5 school - the GC folks better have a former Suns star on speed dial. John Doe won't interest the fans in PHX it would take Charles Barkley, Kevin Johnson, Jeff Hornacek, Tom Chambers, Steve Nash type to keep their attention. Just my opinion.

Why leave the one program in the country that can pay the highest salary of any university? if he proves it they'll pay him.

Why? I doubt money is a major concern for Dan Majerle so it would be the challenge of winning in a P5 environment.

That said he played in the MAC so maybe he doesn't have any desire to go to a P5 job if they came calling.

winning a championship as a mid-major would be a bigger accomplishment if money isn't a factor. I don't know what his personal goals are and he may well want to coach UNC when Williams retires or duke when mike retires. Who wouldn't. But, my guess is his next job will be as an NBA coach.
