Transfer Rules within MVC

Postby Redhawk » June 1st, 2017, 7:52 am

Matt Chastain will walk on at ISUr after leaving Loyola:

Could someone enlighten me on the transfer rules within the MVC? The article states that Loyola did
not give Matt a release to any Valley schools. Is that waived by the fact that he is a walk on and ISUr
is not offering a scholarship?

100% because he will walk on.

Transfer rules apply to scholarship athletes. He wasn't given a release to sign a scholarship to any MVC program, but they can't stop him from going anywhere.

It also applies to kids who signed a LOI but haven't actually started classes yet. As soon as you sign a LOI you are considered a member of the program for transfer purposes. That is, unless the conference comes out and says that they won't enforce the rule unless the affected school forces them too.........I'll stop before I get too far into that rabbit hole.

Would he be scholarship eligible next season? Or does he have to pay his way for two seasons first?

Not sure Moser would put on a friend hat to the school that fired him...

From all I've seen he will be scholarship-eligible for 2018-2019. Was not guaranteed a scholarship as of yet. Given that ISUr has no senior and 2 scholarships in hand (hoping to still use one and pocket one), probably good idea not to tie one up just yet.

In talking to people I know in his hometown (Leroy, IL), his primary reason for leaving was that he just did not like the big city. For those unaware, Leroy is a town of about 2700 people. One of my colleagues at work has a son the same age as Matt and is good friends with him so got the information from him.

Great zero risk situation for ISUr. If he recovers from his knee injury can provide him a scholarship at a later date. Will allow Matt to not have to rush back since he has to sit out this year anyway. If not, then keep him as a walk-on and let him enjoy being part of the team.

Should have gone to Illinois State from the beginning.

Why play for an inferior program and coach?
