I can tell

St. John’s plays GCU in Phoenix at 10:30 tonight. It’s not at GCU’s home arena but I bet it will still be a good atmosphere. ESPNU. Watch it and tell me you don’t want them in your conference. Heck, I want them in my conference.

I'd watch it if I had ESPNU. However GCU is just too far away to be in the MVC. I want good midmajor teams from the midwest / great plains area, not from the southwestern US. I also want schools that spend comparatively with the rest of the MVC as well. We don't need another Wichita State. WSU being so good hurt the conference more overall than it helped imo because everyone just assumed that the MVC was turning into a garbage league. For me choosing Northern KY or Milwaukee over GCU is a very easy choice and I'm not that big on either of those schools.

I originally dismissed this argument thinking that Byrd must have a handpicked successor ready to take the reins who can keep Belmont afloat but then I thought about how other programs have tailed off despite even greater investment and commitment than Belmont has shown and now I think this may be a valid concern. Meanwhile Northern Kentucky stubbed their toe tonight and SLU continues to struggle with teams they're "too good for." Where's the consistency? Hopefully these programs right the ship or it's going to be tough to find the right 12th team again.

They could always hire Casey Alexander from Lipscomb. He is a Belmont grad who played for Byrd. Now that he has Lipscomb playing well and beating Belmont he is a logical heir and could keep Belmont relevant.

New expansion candidates discussed by outsiders (Arkansas Tech, Kent State, etc).

No, and no. The following 8 teams are the ONLY teams that should be considered for expansion.

Pick 2 of the following 3 groups
Murray State and Northern Kentucky
SDSU and NDSU
Grand Canyon and New Mexico State

or

St. Louis and Belmont along with Murray and NKU if they want to finally get off the pot. Although if just one wants to come then you may see Milwaukee as the 14th team. FYI: I'm a believer in the 14 team model. I doubt they go to 14 though. If they stay at 12 it HAS to be Murray State and either St. Louis, Belmont, or Northern Kentucky.

You’re telling me you wouldn’t jump at the chance to stick a D2 school in the 12th spot?

And we'd do so because it's a "color we don't have"

What does that even mean? Is it a veiled race shot? They aren't a HBCU. They are a school of 10,000 (actually less but easy math) that is 55% female and 80% white. 7% of their student population is African American - 700 students.

FWIW UNI is the university in the least diverse area of the conference and has a higher African American enrollment.

Arkansas Tech has 10 sports. They'd need to add 4, minimum, to get to D1 status. They need at least 2 more mens sports, as they only sponsor 4 and you have to have at least 6. Not only that they'd have to go from 36 to 63 football scholarships. Given how title IX works, and they are 55-60% female they'd really be hit hard in increase in budget.

Add on to the fact that their endowment is $28m. There entire athletic budget is barely $5m. Tripling the athletic budget still leaves them on the bottom of conference. There's literally zero money there.

Even though it's not like that poster on the other forum is coming over here, can I issue a ceremonial instaban for the poster in that thread that suggested Arkansas Tech?
