I'm going with SIU on this one.

It surprises me that many see SIU as a 5-7 type team. I know there isn't much to differentiate any of the top 6 teams, but SIU has size, a pair of wings who averaged double figures, a seasoned three point specialist, and backcourt depth. I think their roster is better than anyone besides LOC/MSU, and while oft criticized , Barry is a better coach than either Moser or Lusk. But hey that's just me.

I think a lot of people will be surprised by SIU this year. They have the talent to be a top 3 team but are getting 6th and 7th place votes. I guess the Barry factor?

That's exactly why I keep voting for them, I think he's right up there with Lusk and Moser.

To me UNI, Illinois State, and Bradley have the three best coaches. The rest are all about the same, with Lusk, Moser, and Hinson being the three worst.

Went with Valpo just because of the new league with tougher competition than they are used to. But as the Sargent on Hogan's Hero's used to say, "I know no-thing".

MVC is no doubt a better league but Valpo is a no stranger to beating tough teams.

Just the last 3 years Valpo has quite a few quality wins against tough competition:
-Rhode Island (ranked Top 25 at the time)
-BYU (twice)
-Florida State
-Alabama
-St Mary's
-Oregon State
-Belmont
-Nearly beat Maryland in the 1st round of the Tourney (got screwed by a no-foul call at the end of the game)
-Valpo is 5-0 against MVC teams the last 3 years

It surprises me as well - while I'm not thinking Southern will compete for the league title, I would be shocked if they were lower than 5th. If they are, then it's time for a change in leadership because like you said - the size, talent, and guard play is there this year.

I agree with you about Barry being a better coach than Porter or Paul. But I see SIU's returning pieces from their roster and see a 5th-7th place team. That certainly could under value newcomers like Pippen and Bartley (transfer from SLU).

Voting Valpo here (1-7 are really close) but I think they will be one of the few MVC teams to notch a P6 win this year.
