P5 Confs moving to 20 game Conf schedules Hurts Mid-Majors

Jon Rothstein reported yesterday that the Big 10 coaches have voted to approve a 20 game Conference Schedule following the ACC's lead. The Big East is looking to add a 11th member specially to follow the same (sinister) Strategy.

Good Mid-Major teams NEED to play P5 teams to boost our RPI's and Strength of Schedules just to get consideration to from the 'NCAA Selection Committee' for an At-Large bid to the Tournament. Overwhelmingly those games are played on the road. Well very soon those opportunity will be drying up & they purposely are being taken away.

“Moving to 20 league games is going to change the entire model,” one Big Ten athletic director told FanRag Sports last week. “They want to wipe out the non-Power 5 schools from getting at-large bids completely. Moving to 20 games makes that more of a realistic possibility.”

This is not being talked about enough. This will hurt us ALL.

It is BLATANTLY apparent the NCAA does NOT care about Mid-Majors and is all about the $ generated from the Power Conference's. The Selection Committee themselves continually show Power Conference bias and lets in mediocre P5 teams over very good Mid-Majors schools that are arguably better then those teams yet don't get the At-Large because P5's refuse to play them.

The NCAA Selection Committee has screwed teams like Illinois State last year, Valpo from the year before, Monmouth, etc.

Something needs to give because the system isn't working and the people in charge are just complacent.

The people in charge aren’t complacent, they are working for the interests of the P5. Never forget, the big boys really don’t like to share the $$$.

Agreed. They aren't complacent, they're complicit.

Agreed its more complicity.

What annoys me is that the P5s never have to play on the road (TRUE away games) in Non-Conference and the Selection Committee never factors that into the equation. Everyone knows its much more difficult to play on the road in Non-Conference in another teams building. Neutral site Tourney are not even close to the same difficulty. You really see what teams are made of when you play in someone else's building.

The sport of College Basketball is literally shooting itself in the foot in so many ways. The sport needs more Home-&-Home series. That will get more people watching in November and December. The NCAA only responds to $. The networks would be probably appreciate more Home-&-Home match ups, instead of the endless amount of 'buy games' in college basketball. Higher TV ratings = more $$$ for the Schools. Everything is so short sighted with these Power Conferences.

You're right. Ratings for a DePaul-Villanova game are exponentially higher than a DePaul-Drake game. No matter where its played. 20 game schedules are coming into vogue to eliminate clunkers like DePaul-Drake and NJIT-Michigan.

NJIT beat a top 20 ranked Michigan!

Yes, I remember. But being one of the greatest upsets of the last 5 years doesn't mean it got good ratings on TV. Especially before people started to realize Michigan was in trouble.

Mid majors need to stop playing road games at P5 schools. If there isn't a return and it's just for $$ then schedule a home and home with another mid major. When the P5's have to start going on the road and playing other P5s in the non conference, for the entirety of the non-con, they will have to decide if it's worth the extra few losses a year (while losing added home games)

Get into as many neutral court games as you can and avoid buy games where you go to Kentucky and get the loss with no return. Make the P5 kill themselves. If they want to put .500 level schools in the big dance in March then it is what it is. Adding losses to your resumes isn't helping anything.

This would be a great idea if we could get the leagues that are in the 7/8 to 16/18 RPI rankings to shut off the P5s and just play those games amongst themselves instead, it would force the P5s to either go on the road to other P5s or get fat on cupcakes and take the RPI hit from that. Essentially the Bracketbusters concept but in November and December.

Good luck trying to convince mid-major ADs to not take buy games. They need the money.
