Doubt if the best two candidates to replace LUSK get a shot:
Ben McCollum: age 37, Head Coach NWMO State in Maryville, MO. A D2 school. 2017 NCAA D2 National Champions, 13-4 (76%) NCAA Playoff Record. Currentl ranked #1 in D2 and #1 in the MIAA Conference. Very great stats. Career record of 176-71 (71% +) MIAA record 110-49 (69%) over 9 seasons. 2017 NABC and D2 Coach of the Year, Six MIAA Regular Season Conference Titles (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018). Four 4 MIAA Tournament Titles (2016, 2017) and Four -Time MIAA Coach of the Year (2012, 2015, 2016, 2017).

Jeff Boschee. Age 39, Head Coach, MO Southern State U in Joplin. In his fourth season as the head coach after serving four seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at MSSU. As a head coach in 4 sesons his overall record is 76–43 (.64%) MIAA record 52–27 (.66%). 2018 MSSU currently ranked # 6 in D2 and #2 in the 2018 MIAA.
A player and a coach. North Dakot High School Mr Basketball. BIG 12 Freshman of the Year in 1999-2000 and a third team All-BIG 12 his senior season. Helped lead the Jayhawks to a NCAA Final Four appearance in 2002.
After graduating from KU with a Bachelors degree in Sports Management, Boschee played professionally in the USBL, ABA and Europe.

Either McCollum or Boschee great fit for MO State.

So far Lots of out spoken resistance to any D2 coach on the BEARNATION. Best 2 coaches ever at MSU: Bob Vanatta from very small Central Missouri Methodist College to SMS in 1950--2 NAIA championships (51 and 52) and NAIA 3rd in 53. Memphis State NIT Title game in late 50s. HC at MOIZZU. Delta State, Army West point, Commissioner of the OVC. Ed Mathews from Buffalo HS to SMS in 54 or 55, multiple MIAA Conference itles, 4 or 5 D2 National Title games. And D2 coaches can't coach or recruit at the D1 level---BS.

McCollum would be an outstanding hire for MSU. The guy can coach circles around most coaches. It doesn’t matter if you’re D-I or D-II, if you can coach, you can coach. And McCollum can coach!

Missouri State list of potential candidates:

Rick Pitino
Larry Eustace
Seth Miller (only a matter of time)
Tom Izzo (ditto)

Do you need a women's basketball coach? Reggie Lynch is looking for a job.

You’re discussing coaches from over 40 years ago...

Nothing about basketball is the same as they were in the 50s.

NO! I am discussing possible good coaching candidates to replace Lusk.

You and scotte101 are two of the hard cases on the BEARNATION. I doubt either of you know much Bear history from earlier than 2010---probably when you were students--if that far back. Believe me, BB in 1950 was the same as BB in 2018 (dribble, pass, shoot, score, play defense). Plus those teams 20/50 60 years ago played before packed crowds (5OOO fans) in McDonald--do you even know where McDonald is located.

I mention Vanatta and Mathews only to highlight that there were/are coaches who can successfully move from NAIA and D2. to D1. Thus I offer up the names and qualifications/ records of McCollum and Boschee as valid candidates.

And All-MVC Fan agrees with me on McCollum. Doubt if he knows much about Boschee.

I like McCollum and if we were to entertain going with a D-2 HC he'd be top of my list. In a different scenario he'd be worth the risk, but MSU can't take any risks with this hire, which is also why I'm not in favor of any top assistants who haven't been successful HC at D-1 level previously. There's too many guys who have proven they can win at our level looking for an opportunity like we provide. We were said to have offered Counzo $750,000 to $800,000 to stay; don't know if we will go that high on this hire, but I think we'll be aggressive for the right guy. Facilities are top notch, potential for 7,000-8,000 in attendance is well established, and ability to use this job as a stepping stone if that be the goal is also established. List of names should be quite good.

I'm sorry MOST, but saying basketball is the same basketball as 20-30-50 years ago is saying cars are the same as Edsels because they use gas, have headlights and tires. I'm not against looking at a D-2 guy under some circumstances and the history of such hires is no different than for most other types meaning some succeed and some fail. So I understand liking a guy like McCollum, I do to. But the needs of this program right now because of how disenchanted the fan base has been made by Lusk are significant, the moment in time critical for the right hire, so Ijust think you can't take a risk on anyone w/o some history of success at this level already. It might mean you pass on a guy who ulimately has a great career like McCollum, but like I said, the list of interested proven D-1 winners will be substantial.

I like the Maryville MO coach. I hope the Bear's aren't throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
