This was interesting. Loyola-Illinois State scored 1.765M viewers (622k in the 18-49 demo). The 18-49 numbers beat last year's MVC Final, the game preceding this year's MVC Final, and Florida-Kentucky on CBS Saturday afternoon.

As long as we're comparing the MVC to other events last weekend:
That also means that the MVC final had 1/13th the audience of the Academy Awards, almost certainly the best such ratio in conference history.

Some more numbers coming in...
http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2018/03 ... ege-hoops/

Tuesday’s Gonzaga-BYU WCC Tournament final had a 0.6 rating and 877,000 viewers on ESPN, down a third in ratings and 38% in viewership from last year (0.9, 1.4M) and down a tick and 11% respectively from 2016 (0.7, 980K). Gonzaga played St. Mary’s both years. It was the least-watched WCC title game since at least 2011.

In other action, Tuesday’s Wright State-Cleveland State Horizon League final had a 0.31 and 443,000 (-46%) and Monday’s Fairfield-Iona MAAC final had a 0.39 and 565,000 (+96%). The latter game moved up from ESPN2 to ESPN.

Going back to the weekend, Sunday’s Loyola Chicago-Illinois State Missouri Valley Championship had a 1.2 (+33%) and 1.76 million (+30%) on CBS — the largest audience for the game since 2011 (Indiana St.-Missouri St.: 1.84M).

MAAC outdraws Horizon. Was last year's MVC final in the same timeslot? If so, it seems the Chicago market made a big difference (+33%/+30%).

MVC final outdrew UK/UF & UC/WSU (plus last year's MVC final) in the 18-49 demo for last weekend's CBS games. MVC final also doubled BYU/Gonzaga albeit WCC final was a Tuesday on ESPN.

Takeaway from all this is these ratings justify Loyola-Chicago's addition and satisfy the big wigs at CBS - keeping the MVC final safe for another couple years.

Current contract with CBS runs through 2020 and at that point we'd be at 15 consecutive years with the title game on CBS. It's a tradtion that rates as well as anything else they could put in that slot. Plus, with CBS committing to the semifinals on CBSSN, I just don't see anything changing.

Still couldn't top the Bears.
