This UNI conference winning streak is really getting to a ridiculous level.

yet it still pales in comparison to previous UNI conference winning streaks. (or at least one other one)

WSU had regular season conference win streaks of 29 and 34 within the last 5 years. Don't know where UNI is at now, but either way, it's impressive.

UNI has currently won 45 consecutive regular season MVC matches. And if you include the MVC tourney, that streak stretches to 49 matches.

Previously, UNI had a streak of 66 regular season MVC wins (Nov. 8, 1997-Oct. 13, 2001). Or if you want to include MVC tourney matches as well, they had a 69 match streak (Sept. 18, 1998-Oct. 13, 2001). They also had a 43 match streak (incl. MVC tourney matches) from Sept. 23, 1994-Sept. 27, 1996.

Shocks beat Bears tonight in 4, which at this point places both of them firmly within the bubble for the NCAA tournament. Imagine the RPI for each will be around 40 next week. Conference isn't checking out as strong as last year, so I'm thinking 2, perhaps 3 teams to the dance. If either or both teams beat UNI next weekend, that will add weight to getting 2-3 teams in of course.

Looking back, Bears homecourt loss to Kansas St hurts a bit. And Shocker's loss to Northern Colorado after the win over Colorado St does them too.

The Shocks loss to Evansville is the loss that will really hurt more so than the loss against Northern Colorado which will finish at or near the top of the Big Sky Conference.

random meaningless stats fact of the day:

UNI has clinched a spot in the MVC tournament.
(well, I think the conference might have a bylaw that guarantees the host school a spot, but UNI is mathematically guaranteed a top-6 conference finish. Not that that was ever in doubt.)

Some big vb matchups in the MVC this weekend, as UNI comes to Springfield to face Missouri State, and then on to Wichita to face the Shockers.

It's homecoming weekend for the Bears, so I would think that there will be a big crowd (though MSU hasn't drawn all that many for volleyball this season, so I don't know for sure). And WSU always has a big crowd, and they are doing a $3 ticket promo.

In Cedar Falls earlier this season, the Shockers gave the Panthers all they could handle, narrowly winning a 5-setter after being down 0-2 at the break. Personally, I thought UNI looked a little "off", especially early in that match, and WSU was really clicking. Conversely, when MSU came to town the next night, I thought the Bears looked a little off, while the Panthers were clicking, which lead to UNI sweeping the 3 sets.

I fully expect both matches to be intense and hard-fought. It wouldn't surprise me if UNI extends it's conference unbeaten streak, as I feel that if they are on their game, they are a tad better than both the other teams. But neither would it surprise me if the home team pulled off the win in either match. All three teams have had hot matches and cold matches this season, so I have no clue how this weekend will go. I just know that I'll be glued to my radio :)

There was no big crowd for the UNI-Bears match, in part due to the World Series game. Doubt that it was even in the Top 4 of the year so far. Dam those Cardinals.

Bears went up 2-0 in this one, played lights out on D, won many points out of system; after the break, UNI made adjustments and took the final three fairly handily, esp the 4th set.

I will say this for the final time: Bre Payton is a monster of a setter. Without her, I doubt that UNI wins this match. She dominated in this one with an assortment of dumps over the net and shoves to the back corners. I've haven't seen a setter anywhere in the country who has eyes in the side of her head like her. Her peripheral vision must be incredible. UNI's defense picked up after the first two sets, as did the hitting of Lehman and Braun. UNI had zero service return errors for the entire match and passed extremely well in final 3 sets. The final two sets showed me why they are a legitimate Top 10 team.
