ST. LOUIS – Northern Iowa, which clinched the Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball regular-season title for the first time in program history, has earned the No. 1 seed in the State Farm MVC Tournament. The Panthers finished with a regular-season record of 24-5, including a 17-1 mark in league play, securing their best overall and conference records in school history. UNI is also currently on a 16-game winning streak, also its best string of consecutive wins in school history.

Illinois State, Missouri State and Creighton all wrapped up conference play with a 12-6 record. Following the league’s tiebreaking procedures, the Redbirds earned the No. 2 seed, followed by the Lady Bears as the No. 3 seed and the Bluejays as the No. 4 seed.

This year's tournament - the fourth neutral-site event in the conference's history - begins on Thursday, March 10, at The Family Arena in St. Charles. Mo. The top seed has won the conference tournament in 14 of 25 seasons and a team that has won or shared the regular-season title has gone on to win the tournament title 16 times. UNI won the 2010 championship from the No. 5 seed, earning its first NCAA Tournament berth in program history, topping Creighton in the title game.

UNI steamrolled the MVC this year, in historic fashion.

Hope they can continue through the MVC tournament.

Last 15 games of the year UNI held Valley opponents to 48ppg, won by average of 21ppg. Had just one really close game when they beat Jays by 1. They kind of remind me of MSU teams under Burnett back before Stiles.

Anyone on this board attending the Valley Tournament? Going to try to get over there this weekend if I can. Really interesting tournament this year, Milleson better get things turned around this weekend. Winning at Drury is a little different than in this league.

I'm making the drive from Omaha in about 45 minutes, hoping to get to Saint Charles around noon.

I agree with your assessment of the tournament being interesting this year. Despite UNI going 17-1, I still feel like they're beatable. Should be a fun 3 days!

Good luck to all teams, but most of all, go Jays!

P.S. - Garrison kind of got jobbed not getting POY again, don't you think?

when a team wins an 18-game conference schedule by FIVE games, with a conference scoring margin of +19, I would think it rather silly to give POY to someone from any other team.

Today's final will be #1 UNI vs #3 MSU. MSU dropped Drake and Indiana State, and UNI has won both of its games (BU, WSU) by 20 and 15.

Advantage: UNI.
