MSU Bear fans on their BEAR NATION forum are in a tizzy on a hiring a replacement. The "possibles" list circles the block. For some reason every X- Greg Marshal WSU assistant is being touted big time--to the exclusion of many other qualified coaching candidates. For a long time the only acceptable replacement would have to be a serving D1 coach, and then a retired or fired D1 coach. Heard some names bantered around I had not heard in a few years. Then it got crazy--females, high school coaches, Bear alums, etc. Only ones ruled out by every one was D2 coaches. The D2 coach has lived the responsibility of being a successful coach--not so for an assistant. Me, I would just as well accept a high quality, winning, successful head D2 coach as a P5 D1 assistant The fans will clamor for and accept a "hot shot D1 assistant" looking to build his resume and move on in 2 or 3 years. THAT is not building/rebuilding a program.

I again recommend two great D2 candidates: Jeff McCollum at NWMO, and Jeff Boschee at MSSU. McCollum was the 2017 D2 C0Y and NWMO was the 2017 D2 National Champ, and is in the 2018 D2 national tournament as a high seed. Boschee/MSSU is also in the 2018 D2 tournament. As nasty, and hungry for a winning team as the Bear hard core is, they would probably meet McCollum or Boschee at the city limits with a rail, a pot of tar, and a bag of feathers. SAD!!. I know those folks around Springfield--most have never been out of the area except to go to a casino or riverboat, or to ARCH Madness to see the Bears get beat. I guess that is what make them so nasty!

Clearly Boschee and McCullom will be hot names that every D1 job will offer.

Sorry, but I do not understand your comment---please expand or explain. Seems as if something has been omitted.

With the money being offered MSU won't be getting a guy who is a "hot commodity" D1 head coach.

Yeah I'm not sure if he was inferring MSU is not offering much or that with so many big schools in the mix offering a million plus MSU wouldn't be in that neighborhood. I think most around the MSU program figure the $$$ will match the candidate, meaning we aren't gonna throw a million at a guy we can get for $350,000, but that we can go up to $700,000-$800,000 if it's the right guy.I've always found the rationale that just because you aren't paying a certain amount means you can't as kind of silly. We didn't pay Lusk more because we didn't have to, same with Barry, but we offered ZO over $700,000 eight years ago to stay , so it's all relative.

When you start looking at candidates, there are an awful lot of really solid guys making between $200,000-$350,000, so you can easily find a guy for a little more than that if you like him. As noted, I think the Bears are kicking tires on guys at that level and some above that level; to me the key is being willing to be aggressive in moving the salary forward once he starts to have success. There's some guys I really like that I think something around $400,000 or a bit higher would get the job done. To me a bigger deal is how much you can have available for assistants to further entice a quality candidate concerned about developing a program and more than just his payday.
The Bear is the largest carnivore on the North American continent; beware the Bear!

Nobody on Bear Nation wants a high school coach. Nobody on Bear Nation thinks MO State should place some kind of premium on hiring an alum (I mean, Ahearn was mentioned and nobody bought into the idea as a top choice). We also absolutely do not want a D2 coach. I would be immediately opposed to that proposal.

To Bear fans the "hot commodity" is a D1 assistant! For some reason they are chasing every X Greg Marshall/Wichita State/Winthrop assistant they can dig up. Don't understand that infatuation. Because Marshall built WSU into a new national power does not mean one of his assistants can do the same.

Because his 3 former WSU assistants that are head coaches went a combined 77-21 this year and one has already punched an NCAA ticket (first one for the school in 19 years).
