ST. LOUIS – Northern Iowa, which clinched the Missouri Valley Conference women's basketball regular-season title for the first time in program history, has earned the No. 1 seed in the State Farm MVC Tournament. The Panthers finished with a regular-season record of 24-5, including a 17-1 mark in league play, securing their best overall and conference records in school history. UNI is also currently on a 16-game winning streak, also its best string of consecutive wins in school history.
Illinois State, Missouri State and Creighton all wrapped up conference play with a 12-6 record. Following the league’s tiebreaking procedures, the Redbirds earned the No. 2 seed, followed by the Lady Bears as the No. 3 seed and the Bluejays as the No. 4 seed.
This year's tournament - the fourth neutral-site event in the conference's history - begins on Thursday, March 10, at The Family Arena in St. Charles. Mo. The top seed has won the conference tournament in 14 of 25 seasons and a team that has won or shared the regular-season title has gone on to win the tournament title 16 times. UNI won the 2010 championship from the No. 5 seed, earning its first NCAA Tournament berth in program history, topping Creighton in the title game.
