Steve Forbes hired as WSU assistant

Postby Aargh » July 8th, 2013, 11:31 am

In a bizarre turn of events, WSU has hired Steve Forbes (former assistant at Illinois State) to fill the spot that Dana Ford (current assistant coach at Illinois State and former assistant at WSU) held for a year. Ford's replacement, K.T. Turner, left the program after one year, so now Illinois State and WSU have more or less traded assistant coaches.

Forbes had been the head coach at Northwest Florida State. The last person from that JuCo to show up at WSU was Carl Hall.

It's reported that Chris Jans (another former assistant at IlSU and the current Assoc. Head Coach at WSU) and Forbes are good friends. Illinois State and WSU - just one big, happy family.

Forbes has Iowa ties and if I remember correctly, he was one of Bruce Pearl's assistants caught up in the mess at Tennessee.

Yes and Yes

Here is the cbs report of the hire and it mentions both in the article.

I'm all for giving guys a second chance but lying to the NCAA to cover up for a coach is about as serious as it gets in college sports. Hope it works out for everyone.

I read an article covering Forbes and the other Tennessee assistant and they were a little bitter at Pearl about the situation. They said that their families endured some monetary hardships (couldn't sell their house, took a huge cut in pay, paid their own lawyers fees, wives had to find jobs, etc.) to move to other situations while Pearl took a buyout, and vacationed in Europe when Pearl caused the problem in the first place. They mentioned that they both denied any knowledge of what Pearl did because if they would have informed the NCAA, they would have been blacklisted by the coaching profession for not being loyal. Instead, they took their punishment and moved on. They deserved the punishment, but it would have been a difficult decision to make, and they did pay the consequences for Bruce's lies. Bruce didn't.

There were at least a few Iowa Hawkeye fans who wanted Forbes as their new head coach when it became apparent they couldn't lure Pearl away from Tennessee (as if that was ever a possibility).

Really?

How about paying players? Is that more serious?

What about covering up transcripts?

Lying about a MURDER by a former player?

How about calling players during the off period?

Get a grip.
