Sycamores now @ 8-7 after Weekend Sweep of 4

Postby Statman » March 17th, 2015, 3:13 pm

A couple good wins v. Central Michigan & Canisius to open the Sycamore - hosted tourney, and a couple blowout "V's of Rutgers & Canisius to close. ISU bats finally came alive in the latter two (2) games, scoring 27 runs v. depleted opposition pitching staffs. ISU even showed a lil' power w/ 3 HR's & numerous extra-base hits.

ISU played excellent "D" in all the games and their pitching was good, although still searching for that right-handed dominant starter. The ISU staff is loaded w/ quality LHP's. RHP Frosh ETHAN LARRISON showed promise in filling this void in Gm 3, throwing 6 innings w/ only 2 hits in relief.

ISU starts a 3-gm series @ Lincoln, NE v. the Cornhuskers today.

Poor relief P in support of LH starter David Stagg (2 runs/2 hits/4 walks/5.2 innings) spelled doom for the Sycamores. ISU also was very IMPATIENT at the plate, opting for the 1st pitch & failing to generally go deep into the count.

What is Stagg up to on K:BB ratio. Last I heard he was at 17 K's and 16 BB's which is surprising because his control was never much of an issue when I watched him in HS and a Heartland CC. Obviously D-1 baseball is a different beast but control isn't usually something you see just pop up from changing levels. Perhaps trying too hard to locate and not being confident in his stuff without nibbling at the corners?

Good observation on Stagg, which I addressed with his father while talking during the recent Central MICH game in TH. According to the "ol' man (looks like Crocodile Dundee-nice dude!), the new Pitching Coach for ISU (Jordan Tiegs) has changed the "set position" dynamics for all the pitchers, allegedly basing his "biokinetic insight" on some Ivy League bullshit that "everyone around Indianapolis" is now using. LOL

So in essence, Stagg & the rest of the ISU pitching staff is a "work in progress" this season. I guess Tiegs has yet to hear of the saying, "Leave well enough alone." Stagg threw a good game v. NE (comparatively speaking), only giving up 4 walks. Unfortuntely, opposing squads KNOW he's stuggling w/ control and are now taking him deeper into the count, thus shortening his # of innings while lengthening his pitch count.

Funny, but I was curious about Tieg's background, so did some homework.

Says he was drafted by the Reds and implies that the E-ville Otters are a Frontier League MLB minor league club in 2009. The truth - he was Drafted #46 by the Red's after completing his Div II career (1 yr) @ U. of Indianapolis (formerly Indiana Central). He played less than a month w/ the Otters in the INDEPENDENT Frontier League - no association whatsoever to the Reds. The Otters were TERRIBLE that season (22-66 record) and Tiegs "retired" after less that a month.

Not sure 100% if this is the "research" being used by Tiegs:
